How to Read a THCa COA (Certificate of Analysis): A Line-by-Line Guide
Every reputable THCa brand hands you a lab report — but a COA only protects you if you know what you're looking at. Here's how to read one line by line, and the red flags that mean you shouldn't trust it.
"Where can I find lab results for my product?" and "what am I actually looking at?" are two of the questions we field constantly — and they should be. A Certificate of Analysis (COA) is the single most important document in a THCa purchase, but it's only useful if you know how to read it. Here's a section-by-section breakdown.
What a COA Actually Is
A COA is a report issued by an independent, third-party laboratory — not the brand selling the product — confirming what's actually in a specific batch. "Independent" is the operative word: a lab report commissioned and controlled by the seller with no accreditation behind it isn't verification, it's marketing.
Look for accreditation, most commonly ISO/IEC 17025, printed on the report. This is the international standard for testing-lab competence, and it means the lab's methods and equipment are independently audited — not just the product they're testing.
Section 1: Sample and Batch Identification
At the top of every legitimate COA, you should find:
- Batch or lot number — this must match the number printed on your product's packaging. If it doesn't, the COA you're looking at wasn't tested from what's in your hands.
- Test date — cannabinoid and terpene content degrade over time, so a COA more than a year old tells you little about the product as it exists today.
- Lab name and accreditation number — searchable, so you can confirm the lab is real and currently accredited.
Section 2: Cannabinoid Potency
This is the panel most people jump straight to, and it's where "legal" is actually proven or disproven. Look for:
- Delta-9 THC: must be at or below 0.3% on a dry-weight basis for federal Farm Bill compliance. This is the number that matters most legally.
- THCa: the raw compound the flower is sold for — this is typically the largest number on the panel and represents potential potency once decarboxylated (heated).
- Total THC: sometimes shown as a calculated figure (THCa × 0.877 + Delta-9 THC) representing what the product would test at after full decarboxylation. Some states use this figure, not raw Delta-9 THC, to determine compliance — which is part of why state law varies (see our state-by-state legality guide).
- CBD, CBG, CBN and other minor cannabinoids, if present.
Section 3: Terpene Profile
Not every COA includes this, but the good ones do. A terpene panel lists the aromatic compounds present and their percentage by weight — myrcene, limonene, caryophyllene, and so on. This is what actually determines a strain's smell, flavor, and much of its felt effect, independent of THC percentage. Two batches with identical THCa numbers can feel noticeably different based on this panel alone.
Section 4: Contaminant Screening — the Part Most People Skip
This is arguably more important than the potency numbers, and it's the section worth actually reading rather than skimming past:
- Pesticides: should show "Pass" or non-detect (ND) against the full required panel, not just a subset.
- Heavy metals: lead, arsenic, cadmium, and mercury should all be listed as ND or below the regulatory action limit.
- Residual solvents: relevant mainly for concentrates and hash, confirming no unsafe solvent residue from extraction.
- Microbials: mold, yeast, and bacteria counts — flower is a plant product, so this matters more than people expect.
A COA that only shows a potency panel and skips contaminant screening entirely is incomplete, even if the cannabinoid numbers look great.
Red Flags When Reviewing a COA
- Batch number doesn't match your packaging — the single most important thing to verify, and the easiest to miss.
- No accreditation number, or one that isn't verifiable when searched.
- Test date older than 12 months, especially for a batch still being actively sold.
- Potency-only reports with no contaminant or pesticide screening at all.
- A COA that's a generic PDF reused across multiple different product listings rather than tied to one specific batch.
